Peter: Murray Lions make interesting 'short-range Queens'. And four of them make sense, as each Murray Lion visits only 16 squares on the board (until it captures on an adjacent square).
I realize this topic has been inactive for over a year, but I just had an idea:

Lazy King Double Weak Queen Chess

or

Lazy Chess

Setup

Standard board and setup, but King starts in hand, and second Queen
takes its place.

Rules

Rules are the same as Orthochess, except where noted below.

On their first, second, third, fourth or fifth turn, a player must place
their King on an unattacked square. That constitutes their move for that
turn.

Queens may move only one, two or three squares at a time, in the usual directions.

Nothing fancy here. The lazy King was inspired by the King in Idle King, and the weakened Queens are because there are two of them.
(Well, you asked) A somewhat odd try at might be 'Nordic-QQ Chess'. Pieces are placed on the borders of spaces within a rank (RNBQKQBNR; PPPP_PPPP) and are presumed to be virtual domino chessmen occupying two spaces on the rank. Two friendly chessmen may share a space, but not from the same border; opposing pieces may not share a space. The units move by choosing either the left or right space and moving as in standard chess -- they may move through a space 'occupied' by a single friendly unit, but not through a space 'occupied' by two friendly units or an opposing unit. To come to rest on a space, units must resume either the right position (if they moved via the left) or the right position (if they moved via the left). Units occuping a side edge are hanging over the board and have only one path available. Moving to a border occupied by an opposing unit or onto a space (before reoccupying the border) shared by one or more opposing units produces one or more captures.
The first thing that I thought of was Double Royal Queen Chess, which should be self-explanatory. The second thing I thought of was Anti-King Chess or Anti-King Chess II with a queen replacing the original King, and thus removing the entire King Thing. I dunno about anything else, though.
